The Seven Unspoken Rules on a Yacht

Here are the unspoken yacht etiquette rules you should never break under any circumstances if you want to ensure a smooth and elegant onboard experience.

Shoes Off Onboard

Always take off your shoes when you step onto a yacht. Those teak decks are gorgeous, but also fragile. Street shoes stay at the dock. Board barefoot, in socks, or with yacht-approved soft shoes.

One Person on the Gangway

Only one single person should be on the gangway at a time. It’s polite to give others space, but it’s also a practical must. Long gangways will bounce and sway if multiple people are on them.

Toilets are Different

Golden Rule: Never throw toilet paper or any foreign objects into the toilet. Remember, yacht toilets work differently and are more sensitive than those at home.

Yachts have narrow plumbing lines that clog easily and the toilet pumps (macerators) are delicate devices prone to malfunction. This has nothing to do with the yacht’s size or quality. It is the same on every yacht!

Most yacht toilets have “before” and “after” buttons for proper use. If you’re unsure, simply ask a crew member. It’s always better to ask in advance than to risk a blocked toilet ruining your entire yacht experience.

Skip Spray Tans & Oils

Avoid spray tans and coconut oils. They stain everything: decks, cushions, towels. Instead, use yacht-safe sunscreen provided by the crew.

Respect the Crew

The crew is there to assist and serve you, but they are not your personal butlers. Be courteous, avoid entering crew-only areas, and refrain from making unexpected or excessive requests.

Always respect the crew’s rest and break times.

Ask Before Posting

Privacy is highly valued on yachts. You’re welcome to take photos but if you plan to tag the location or share anything on social media, make sure to get permission from the yacht owner or your group leader. Always ask first!

Swimwear Etiquette

After swimming, don’t sit on sofas or interior furniture while wet. Interiors are often custom-built and very expensive. Always dry off before heading inside.
